Arcadia Public Library (ARC)

Library Services
Arcadia Public Library is pleased to offer an internship with a broad introduction to public library service. The internship is designed to provide experience, familiarity, and exposure to the library’s public sector sections, management procedures, and library automation systems in a diverse community environment.
The intern will spend time working in the Library’s Adult and Children’s service sections. After observation and training, the intern will work on the public desks with a librarian and assist in answering questions and providing reference services.
The intern will be exposed to collection development processes, government documents, local history, public program planning, implementation and publicity.
The intern will be under the general supervision of the Library Services Manager for Program and Collection Development and will work directly with the Principal Librarians for Adult and Children’s services.
Opportunities will also be provided for orientation and observation in the Technical Services, Circulation, and Information Systems sections. The intern will be encouraged to participate in staff meetings, a Library Board meeting, and a Southern California Library Cooperative meeting as the schedule permits.

Burbank Public Library (BUR)

Branches
The Burbank Public Library is pleased to offer an opportunity for interns to work at two branch sites. Burbank's branches offer the full spectrum of library service, from reference to children's programming. Our intern will gain hands-on reference experience, both adult and children, using the library's Sirsi iBistro online catalog and other print and online resources. If interested, the intern may assist with children's programming and class visits and/or assist with implementing features on iBistro. To round off the experience, the student will be involved in collection development (using Baker & Taylor's TitleSource II software), inventory, and preparing booklists and pathfinders. If you are looking for an opportunity to get to know your patrons and to do a "little of everything", our branch experience is for you.

Literacy Services
The Burbank Public Library is pleased to offer an opportunity for interns to work in Literacy Services. Our intern will gain practical experience with outreach, recruiting, training, and support for our Adult Learners and Tutors. If you are looking for an introduction to basic literacy, Families for Literacy, or Limited English Proficiency, this is the library for you.

Reference Department
The Burbank Public Library is pleased to offer an opportunity for a split internship between Reference and Young Adult Services, at its Central Library. For the Reference portion of the internship, our intern will gain practical reference experience utilizing both print and online resources, including the Sirsi iBistro online catalog. Customer service and the reference interview will be emphasized. Weeding projects will also be included.
For the Young Adult training, the intern will be involved in collection development (using Baker & Taylor's TitleSource II software), inventory, and preparing booklists. The intern may also be included in program planning for Teen Summer Reading Club. If you are looking for an introduction to public librarianship, with an encouraging, motivating staff, this is the library for you.

Oxnard Public Library (OXN)

Computer Curriculum
The Oxnard Public Library is pleased to offer an opportunity for interns to work with a Librarian to develop and implement a computer class curriculum to meet the Library goal of fostering computer literacy in the community. Interns will work in cooperation with a Librarian to design written materials and, as a part of a team, to present instructional courses to customers on use of computers, software, the Internet, and other electronic resources. Applicants will gain experience in development of programs and standards, providing public service, and knowledge of how libraries can meet the needs of customers through non-traditional services. Candidates should have a strong commitment to providing library service to a diverse population, have the ability to work creatively and positively with staff and the public; excellent organizational skills. Multi-lingual competence is highly desirable, especially the ability to communicate well in Spanish.

To gain experience in instructing patrons in the use of public access computers, software, electronic resources and the Internet

Reference and Branch Services
The Oxnard Public Library is pleased to offer an internship to a candidate interested in providing excellent customer service to a diverse community. Under the supervision of a Library Services Supervisor, interns will gain hands-on experience as an active member of the Information/Reference or Branch Services Divisions. Spending time in Adult, Children's, Literacy and/or Branch Services Units, interns will gain experience in collection development; participate in professional discussions, MCLS workshops and training sessions; assist on service desks, providing telephone, web-based and in-person reference assistance; provide bibliographic instruction to Library customers; and, assist with programming, including visits to schools. Multi-lingual competence is highly desirable, especially the ability to communicate well in Spanish. Palos Verdes Library District (PVP)

Adult Reference Intern
The primary duty of the intern is to work on a central library reference desk, providing both in-house and telephone assistance using the fully-integrated automated online catalog. Always working with at least one professional librarian, the intern answers both in-depth and ready reference questions, offers instruction in the use of the online catalog and Internet, provides reader’s advisory assistance and helps patrons use library materials. Resources include electronic databases from Gale, EBSCO, and ProQuest.

Santa Monica Public Library (SAM) Branch (Latino Outreach), Reference or Teen Services Santa Monica Public Library offers the opportunity for a quality internship experience at our new state-of-the-art Main Library and our neighborhood branch libraries. Library staff strives to provide the community, which is strongly committed to youth, education and supporting its municipal library system, with excellent collections, services, programs and facilities.

Internship opportunities may be offered at the Main Library in Public, Reference or Youth Services. An internship in Public Services offers the chance to provide direct public service at the Information Desk and to develop a project associated with adult programming, public relations and marketing library, volunteer services or community outreach.
Reference internships involve providing direct public service at the Reference Desk and developing a special project involving collection management, local history, development of an instructional computer class, and training and analysis of live, interactive chat reference.
In Youth Services, interns have the option of focusing on children’s and/or teen services and provide direct public service at the Youth Reference Desk, assist with collection development projects, and may present a story time, a class visit, a teen program or develop a bibliography or Web pathfinder (see smplkids.org or smplteens.org).
Santa Monica’s three branches reflect the richness and diversity of the city’s commercial and residential neighborhoods. Internship duties include assisting with reference and readers’ advisory at the branch service desk. The branches offer an exceptional opportunity for those interested in children’s and teen services to present youth programs, develop a special youth-related project or perform a collection assignment. South Pasadena Public Library (SOPAS) Local History Internship The South Pasadena Public Library Local History Internship provides students experience in local history, research skills, archival methods and collection management. The Local History Collection serves as a repository for documents of historic value for the City of South Pasadena and as a resource for residents with questions about the city.
