ADULT SERVICES MANAGER (Yorba Linda Public Library)
THE POSITION
Under the supervision of the Library Director, supervises, plans, and coordinates the activities and operations of the Adult Services department; coordinates assigned activities with other departments, outside agencies, and the general public; provides highly responsible and complex staff assistance to the Library Director.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Plans, organizes, assigns, reviews and supervises the work of Adult Services; selects, supervises, trains and evaluates subordinate staff.
- Establishes standards for the adult book collection and other materials and makes final selections; studies current trends and professional techniques; participates in the activities of professional organizations.
- Provides assistance to patrons, including teens, parents, and adults, in the effective use of the Library’s collection, facilities and services. Performs readers’ advisory work and handles the most difficult reference questions.
- Develops goals and objectives for Adult Services and monitors progress toward achieving them; assists in developing library policies and procedures and implementing them; prepares statistics and reports; assists in developing the department budget.
- Evaluates program of service to adults and makes recommendations for changes or for new, more technically advanced services that would better meet the needs of the community; guides programming that stimulates knowledge and reading for adults and teens.
- Establishes and maintains public relations within the community with various groups and organizations; provides outreach services, workshops, and training programs as requested; responds to citizen inquires and resolves difficult and sensitive complaints.
- Takes charge of overall building supervision in conjunction with the other division supervisors; recommends and oversees solutions for various facility issues; represents the Library Director at professional and staff meetings and community functions when necessary and acts for the Director in her absence.
- Performs other duties as needed.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to manage and coordinate the work of professional and para-professional staff; select supervise, train, motivate and evaluate staff.
- Knowledge of modern library organization, procedures and policies.
- Knowledge of a wide variety of literature and non-print materials for adults as well as materials for other areas of service.
- Knowledge of and ability to analyze new trends in services to adults such as next generation technology, new reference delivery models, cooperative networking, etc.
- Ability to analyze community needs and recommend specific plans for modifying or extending library services.
- Ability to coordinate special projects and programs that relate to improved library service.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of planning and organizing workloads; ability to analyze professional and administrative problems and to take or recommend actions for their solutions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relations with the public and co-workers.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical tasks of this position include sitting at a desk and computer terminal, walking, reaching, lifting, turning and twisting, bending and stooping, pushing and pulling. Sitting, standing and walking can each be for sustained periods of time from one to two hours; reaching to shelf height of seven feet; lifting an average of twenty pounds; and pushing and pulling including carts with a force of up to 60 pounds. Each physical task occurs in variations throughout the day.
Vision requirements include ability to read books, magazines, and other printed materials; computer screens, signage, etc. Hearing and speaking requirements include ability to communicate effectively and in a timely manner over the telephone, person to person with the public and co-workers and to groups.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s Degree in Library Science. Two years of progressively responsible professional experience in a public library, including experience in supervision.
EXEMPT – NON-EXEMPT
This is an exempt position. No overtime is paid for hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week.
