Works under general supervision, to serve as a working lead person, and to perform a variety of responsible paraprofessional library duties.

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.


Provide support to Librarians by assisting with Adult, Senior, Teen/Youth and pre-primer programs. Assist in reference and collection maintenance for programs.

Assist patrons with basic reference and light research, utilizing standard print and non-print resources. Refer more difficult reference queries to appropriate professional staff.

Select materials and develops story time programs; implements program service delivery.

Coordinate selected activities within the library; develop and conduct library programs including children’s story hour, outreach to schools and the community, class visits, and library tours.

Implement library policies and procedures; resolve patron concerns.

Classify library materials including web Bookmarks, and perform a variety of cataloging duties excluding original cataloging.

Instruct patrons in the use of library resources such as equipment and catalogs. Conduct a variety of instructional classes in library technology and resource use.

Participate in selection of part-time staff; schedule, provide direction and functional supervision to part-time Library Technicians and library volunteers. Train, schedule, and evaluate performance of Workforce Investment Act (WIC) program youth workers.

Make internal recommendations on the selection of books and other library materials.

Provide support to grant writing by recording and maintaining statistical records of program participants.

Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Experience and Training Guidelines: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities are as follows:

Experience: Previous public Library experience in a senior clerical or paraprofessional job.

Knowledge of: Literature; public library operations and automated systems, policies and procedures; current events; conducting research and reference tools; library technical resources and trouble shooting of library equipment; developing presentations and age appropriate programs; basic software application packages; basic math; basic scheduling methods; principles and practices of team building. Working with children and students is highly desirable.

Ability to: Work independently; use sound judgment and problem solving skills; communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing; develop and present programs; assist library patrons in material selection; listen effectively; use good judgment within the scope of authority; understand and carry out both oral and written instructions; handle stressful situations; recognize and resolve problems; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; answer a variety of general questions regarding library use; record data and maintain statistical records; assist in grant writing; write memos and reports.

Supplemental Information

License/Certification Required: A Bachelor of Arts degree is strongly preferred. An AA or Library Technology Certificate and equivalent paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the Bachelor degree. Ability to obtain a valid Class C California Driver’s License may be required for certain job assignments.

Environment/Working Conditions

Environmental Conditions: Positions assigned to this classification work in an open, public area of a library building.

Physical Conditions: Able to lift objects weighing up to 15 pounds; have visual acuity sufficient to read print material and computer screens; and may be required to stand, bend forward and reach overhead for sustained periods.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Positions assigned to this classification receive general supervision from a Librarian. 

Positions assigned to this classification may provide scheduling and functional direction to part time Library Technicians, Library Clerks, Library Pages, and volunteers.
